What is an OS-CON type capacitor?
OS-CON is an aluminium type capacitor with an organic semiconductive type electrolyte.
Some of the superior features of theOS-CON type capacitor:
-
Very low ESR
-
ESR is stable over a wide temperature range
-
Wide temperature range -55 degrees C to 105 degrees C
-
Wide frequency range
-
High ripple current capability
-
Long life
Because of the properties of the OS-CON, a much smaller value of capacitance can be used as compared to a normal aluminium electrolytic capacitor. Inductors can be reduced or eliminated. Also small bypass type capacitors can often be eliminated in an application circuit and the noise will be reduced by the OS-CON.
The OS-CON can be cost effective when designed into the circuit from the beginning in order to best utilize the unique properties.
History of the OS-CON
The OS-CON is an aluminum solid capacitor with organic semiconductive electrolyte used as cathode conductive materials. The OS-CON is the first product using organic semiconductive electrolyte as a practical industrial material.
1st Generation
Aluminium electrolytic capacitor with Liquid electrolyte (Al CAP) developed by G.E. in 1908.
2nd Generation
Solid electrolyte capacitor with Manganese dioxide (Ta Cap) developed by W.E. and Sprague in 1953.
3rd Generation
Aluminum solid capacitor with Organic semiconductive electrolyte (OS-CON) developed by Sanyo in 1982.
